How This WGS84 GPS Coordinate Converter Works
This coordinate converter translates any location on Earth simultaneously between
Decimal Degrees (DD), Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS),
Degrees Decimal Minutes (DDM), and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)
referenced to the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84 / EPSG:4326) ellipsoid
(semi-major axis a = 6,378,137 m, flattening f = 1 / 298.257223563).
You can paste a combined coordinate string in any of the four notations, use your current browser
GPS reading, or enter degrees, arcminutes, and arcseconds field-by-field.
Conversion Formulas Between DD, DMS, and DDM
Every degree of latitude or longitude is subdivided into 60 arcminutes (′), and each arcminute is subdivided into 60 arcseconds (″), totaling 3,600 arcseconds per degree:
- DMS to Decimal Degrees (DD):
DD = ±(Degrees + Minutes / 60 + Seconds / 3600), using a negative sign (−) for South (S) latitudes and West (W) longitudes, and a positive sign (+) for North (N) and East (E). - Decimal Degrees to DDM: Keep the integer degrees
D = floor(|DD|)and multiply the remaining decimal fraction by 60 to obtain decimal minutes:M = (|DD| − D) × 60, rounded to 3 or 4 decimal places (standard for marine chartplotters, U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue, and geocaching). - Decimal Degrees to DMS: Take the integer part of decimal minutes as whole arcminutes
M_int = floor(M)and multiply the remainder by 60 for arcseconds:S = (M − M_int) × 60. Our converter automatically handles carry-over rounding so59.999″rolls cleanly into the next minute or degree instead of printing60.0″.
Ground Resolution of Decimal Places and Arcseconds
Along any meridian of latitude, 1° equals approximately 111.13 kilometers (69.05 miles),
1′ equals 1.852 kilometers (1.00 nautical mile or 6,076 feet), and 1″ equals
about 30.87 meters (101.3 feet). In Decimal Degrees, 4 decimal places (0.0001°) resolve to
11.1 meters, 5 decimal places (0.00001°) to 1.11 meters, and 6 decimal places
(0.000001°) to 0.11 meters (4.3 inches). Need bidirectional UTM zone and meter conversions or
