How the Interactive U.S. ZIP Code Boundary Map Works

This interactive U.S. ZIP Code map combines two official U.S. Census Bureau datasets: live vector and raster polygon boundaries from the TIGERweb tigerWMS_Current MapServer Layer 2 (2020 Census 5-Digit ZIP Code Tabulation Areas), and the 2020 ZCTA-to-County Relationship File covering 33,791 five-digit ZCTAs across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. You can explore boundaries in three ways:

Why Roughly One in Four ZIP Codes Crosses County Lines

USPS 5-digit ZIP Codes are designed around postal carrier delivery routes rather than county or city borders. As a result, approximately 25% of U.S. ZIP Codes span two or more counties. Whenever you select a ZIP Code on this map, QuickWhere displays the exact percentage of the ZCTA’s land area that falls inside each overlapping county.
