What Country Am I In?
Tap Use my location to check which country or territory your current GPS coordinates fall in. When you are inside the United States, we also look up your state and county from U.S. Census Bureau boundaries.
How This GPS Country and Border Lookup Works
This tool determines which sovereign country or dependent territory any GPS coordinate falls inside by running a client-side point-in-polygon ray-casting test against 242 countries and territories from the Natural Earth 1:50m cultural boundary dataset (ne_50m_admin_0_countries), and automatically queries the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder for your state and county whenever the point lies inside the United States or its territories.
Handling Enclaves, International Borders, and Ocean Points
Global country identification requires more than a simple bounding box check. Our geometric lookup accounts for three important real-world cases:
- Enclaves and Interior Polygon Rings: Countries completely surrounded by another nation—such as Lesotho inside South Africa, or San Marino and Vatican City inside Italy—are represented as interior hole rings in the surrounding country’s polygon. Our algorithm tests both outer rings and interior holes so enclaves are never misclassified as their surrounding neighbor.
- Border and Coastline Proximity Warnings: Because Natural Earth 1:50m polygons are cartographically generalized to a scale of roughly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), points near river borders or border crossings—such as Detroit, Michigan vs. Windsor, Ontario, or San Ysidro, California vs. Tijuana, Mexico—trigger a border proximity notice whenever your coordinates or GPS accuracy circle sit within 2 kilometers of a polygon edge.
- International Waters and High Seas: Coordinates located in open ocean outside 1:50m land polygons return a clear notice that no land country polygon covers that point, while still plotting the exact coordinates on the world map.
