QuickWhere

Radius Map Tool

Draw an accurate spherical distance circle in miles or kilometers around any U.S. city, 5-digit ZIP Code, street address, or latitude/longitude coordinates, and inspect every town and ZIP Code inside the circle.

Enter a center city, 5-digit ZIP Code, coordinates, or street address and a radius in miles or kilometers.

How This Spherical Radius Map Tool Works

This radius map tool draws a true geodesic distance circle (up to 500 miles or 800 kilometers) around any U.S. city, 5-digit ZIP Code, street address, or GPS coordinate by projecting 64 compass bearings outward along the curved surface of the Earth (R = 6,371,008.8 meters), and simultaneously lists every U.S. Census municipality and 5-digit ZIP Code centroid inside that radius.

Why Geodesic Circles Beat Flat Web Mercator Circles

Standard web maps use the Web Mercator projection, which stretches distances east-to-west and north-to-south as you move away from the Equator. At 45°N latitude (such as Minneapolis, Portland, or Montreal), 1 mile on the ground takes up 41% more map pixels than 1 mile at the Equator. If a map tool simply draws a flat screen circle in pixels, its northern and southern edges are miles off from the true distance. QuickWhere solves the forward spherical geodesic equation at every 5.625° of azimuth so every point on the orange boundary ring lies at your exact chosen mileage from the center pin.
