How 5-Digit ZIP Codes Within a Radius Are Calculated
This tool finds every 5-digit U.S. ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) within a custom mile or kilometer radius of your starting location by testing your search circle against the bounding boxes of all 3-digit ZIP Code prefixes (006 through 999), loading the matching prefix shards from our 33,791-ZIP Census dataset, and measuring the exact haversine great-circle distance from your origin to each ZCTA’s official internal point (INTPTLAT, INTPTLON).
One-Click Export for Territory Planning and Local Marketing
Whether you are setting up local delivery zones, service-area ad targeting, regional job recruiting, or sales territories, you can copy all matching 5-digit ZIP Codes in a single click as a comma-separated list, or inspect the table to see each ZIP Code’s primary state, primary county, and exact distance in miles and kilometers from your center point. Clicking any ZIP Code in the results opens its full multi-county breakdown on ZIP Code to County Lookup.
Important Notes on ZCTA Centroids vs. Polygon Edges
- Centroid Inclusion Rule: In accordance with standard postal radius calculators, a 5-digit ZCTA is included when its official 2020 U.S. Census internal point lies at or inside your specified radius distance.
- Large Rural ZCTAs: In rural western states where a single ZCTA polygon can span 15 to 30 miles across, part of a ZIP Code’s land area may touch your radius ring even if its central internal point sits a few miles outside the ring. If you want to capture every partially overlapping rural ZCTA, add a 5-to-10-mile buffer to your radius.
- PO Box and Unique Facility ZIPs: This dataset covers all 33,791 land-based 2020 Census ZCTAs; non-geographic PO Box-only ZIP Codes without land polygons are excluded.
