How the Geographic Halfway Point Is Calculated
This halfway point calculator finds the exact spherical midpoint along the great-circle arc connecting any two locations on Earth, rather than simply averaging their latitude and longitude numbers on a flat map. After converting both starting points into 3D unit vectors on the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) mean sphere (R = 6,371,008.8 meters), the tool normalizes their vector sum to locate the true surface point equidistant from Point A and Point B.
Why Averaging Latitude and Longitude Gives the Wrong Midpoint
Lines of longitude converge as you move from the Equator toward the poles. On a flat Web Mercator map, simply taking (lat1 + lat2) / 2 and (lon1 + lon2) / 2 follows a rhumb line rather than the shortest great-circle path. Across cross-country U.S. routes—such as Seattle to Boston or Los Angeles to New York—the true great-circle midpoint arcs significantly farther north than a flat straight line drawn on a wall map.
Finding Nearby Towns and the County at the Midpoint
An exact mathematical midpoint often lands in rural farmland, forest, or open water. To make the result immediately useful for planning a meeting spot, regional stopover, or territory boundary, QuickWhere pairs the exact midpoint coordinates with two neighborhood lookups:
- 10 Closest Cities and Towns: Queries our 1°×1° spatial index of 32,642 U.S. Census Bureau Incorporated Places and Census Designated Places, ranking the 10 nearest communities by straight-line distance from the exact midpoint.
- County and State Jurisdiction: Queries the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder at the midpoint coordinates to report the exact county, 5-digit FIPS code, and state where the halfway point falls.
Straight-Line Midpoint vs. Highway Driving Midpoint
Please note that this tool computes the geographic great-circle midpoint (equal straight-line distance from both endpoints), not a turn-by-turn highway driving-time midpoint. Mountain passes, river crossings, and interstate routing can shift the halfway driving point by several miles; use the 10 closest towns table above to pick the town that sits right on your highway corridor, or compare total distances on Distance Between Cities and As the Crow Flies Distance.
