What State Am I In?

Tap Use my location or enter a U.S. street address, ZIP Code, or coordinates to check which state or territory you're in, along with its postal abbreviation, state capital, time zone, and county.

How This U.S. State and Territory Lookup Works

This tool identifies which U.S. state, federal district, or territory your current GPS coordinates, street address, or 5-digit ZIP Code fall inside by querying the U.S. Census Bureau’s official state and county boundary layers, returning the full state name, two-letter USPS postal abbreviation, 2-digit state FIPS code, state capital, statutory time zone coverage, and current county. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands are supported.

Why Checking State Lines Matters on the Road and in Metro Areas

Interstate highways, bridges, rivers, and metropolitan areas frequently straddle state boundaries where cellular towers or mailing addresses can be misleading:

Data Sources and Border Accuracy

State and county boundaries come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s current TIGER/Line benchmark and TIGERweb State_County service. If you are parked within a few hundred feet of a state border sign or river bridge, GPS uncertainty can overlap the neighboring state; enter your exact street address or check What Time Zone Am I In? and Printable State Maps for detailed state outlines.
